Ahir Embroidery
Ahirs are a widely distributed caste of herdsmen and agriculturists found in Kutch District in Gujarat. According to Ahir community elders, all Ahir sub-castes migrated to Kutch from Mathura in Uttar Pradesh.
The elaborate embroideries of the Ahirs contain a scintillating arrangement of perfectly aligned, repeating floral units on a green or blue background. A well-made piece may be entirely overed with shimmering embroidery without any unadorned areas in between. The "Aka Dhungo" flower design rendered in the centre is one of the most popular designs of the Ahirs as it can be efficiently enlarged in sequential layers.
