Lohana Embroidery
The Lohana community of Kutch is one of the most affluent business communities in the region and is admired for its shrewd but straightforward business acumen. Their migratory journey commenced at Multan and was centred around various trade dealings conducted through the centuries. Even during the times of the princely regimes in Kutch, Lohana businessmen were granted great power, and many held the position of Diwan (Kings Adviser) due to their wealth and business astuteness. Majority of the Lohanas were successful shopkeepers, grain dealers, and writers.
The charming embroidery of the Lohanas has been extinct for over half a century, although many Lohana embroiderers continue to render simpler, modern designs in their needle-crafted costumes.
Original Lohana embroidery shows a predilection for curvilinear figurative and floral motifs. They outline their motifs with Chain Stitch and then proceed to infill the segments with Chain Stitch laid parallel to the outlines. The distinguishing feature of Lohana embroidery is the exclusive use of Chain Stitch.
